I have followed these instructions and got a screen saying
Odin mode
Download speed: fast
Product name: SM-J710GN
current binary: Samsung official
System status :official
FRP lock: off
Secure diwnload: enabled
Warranty void: 1 (0x0400)

It says it is downloading and do not turn off target, but it is frozen on this screen and has been for several minutes.
I am panicking. Have I voided the warranty? Have I messed up? This is my daughter's phone we gave her as a Christmas present and I can't afford to replace it! Please help if you can.

First of all I am really sorry for the delayed response.
This happened because you pressed the wrong key combination.
Please press "vol up" instead of 'vol down".
Please don't worry about the warranty because entering download mode will not void your warranty in any case.

by resetting my J5 Samsung will Irecover my data

No. Once resetted all the data on your phone will be erased. But the sdcard data will be safe. Please note that however with sophisticated software we can still recover the data from your phone, which is a tough process though.

reading the introduction to this it said whether it was rooted or not it would work but now I am stuck at step to send file to root folder and I don't know how or even if I can do that..

:)
It doesn't mean that you need to be rooted. Root folder is the base folder of your sdcard. You just need to copy the files to your sdcard's base folder.
